Poem in Your Pocket Day

Today is Poem in Your Pocket day at our school and it is really such an excellent way to say goodbye to poetry month.  Of course, I had a poem in my pocket, too. A Haiku for you.

Most of my students chose to write their own poems to keep in their pockets and a couple copied poems from their favorite authors. It was so fantastic to see them on the playground sharing their poetry with one another and I was humbled to learn that I was the subject of a lot of their poetry.
Check out this haiku... it's ok to count the syllables to check ;)

This one below is from a very special student - she has made AMAZING progress!

And here's a haiku...
Freestylin... (read this one with that coffee house poetry vibe going on)

A little more freestyle...

An awesome acrostic...

Willie made the cut, too! Haiku for Willie...

And one superstar decided to whip up a diamonte poem- like a boss! Wow!

So sweet!

Poetry Month Ends, wah, wah, wah...

Every class is different and so the way we learn about poetry is different with each class - but we had such a great time with poetry this year.

We learned about acrostic, alliteration, cinquain, diamante, autobiography and haiku poetry. We read and wrote and read and wrote and created books that really showed what the students learned.

Poetry Journals

Ah, April - How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

Today is the official close of poetry month, though a few of us -ahem- need a another day to finish our journals.

But, what I've seen so far, looks spectacular!

Fast.
A fish moves
Like a lizard in
The desert.
When you grab it
It shakes like
A dancer in the
Air.

Poetry Doors

Today we got into observing the world with a poet's eye!

Wow! Did we get into observing our scissors! I love poetry because even ELL's or reluctant writers can produce a pretty awesome piece of writing and feel quick accomplishment!
